What is the Passeig de la Muralla
It is the elevated walk along the medieval city walls of Girona. The walls were built by the Carolingians in the 9th century and reinforced through the 14th century. After centuries of neglect they were restored as a public footpath in the 1960s. Today the path runs around 1.5 km along the eastern flank of the Old Town with several towers, ramparts and viewpoints.
Where to start the walk
The two main entrances are:
- North entrance: Jardins de la Francesa, just behind the church of Sant Pere de Galligants. Walk past Sant Felix and follow the signs uphill.
- South entrance: Jardins dels Alemanys, behind the Cathedral. Use this if you are starting from Plaza Catalunya.
Walking south to north (from Plaza Catalunya to Sant Pere) is the recommended direction because the views of the Cathedral open up gradually.
Opening hours and entry fee
Entry is free. Hours follow the city park schedule:
- May to September: 8:00 to 21:00
- October: 8:00 to 20:00
- November to April: 8:00 to 18:00
Closed during heavy rain or storms for safety reasons. The path is partly stairs and uneven cobblestone, so wear comfortable shoes.
Best photo viewpoints
The four key towers along the route are Torre Gironella, Torre Cornelia, Torre del General Peralta and Torre Julia. Torre Gironella is the highest point in the Old Town and the best photo of the Cathedral. Sunset light hits the Cathedral facade around 19:30 in summer.
Combine with the Old Town circuit
A perfect Old Town morning: Cathedral and Jewish Quarter at 9:30, Arab Baths at 12:00, lunch on Plaza dels Jurats, then the Passeig de la Muralla starting at 16:00 to catch the late afternoon light. Exit at Plaza Catalunya for tapas.
Accessibility
The route includes around 200 stairs spread along the walk, so it is not wheelchair accessible. Strollers can manage the lower sections near Plaza Catalunya but not the towers.
