Girona Old Town Guide
What to see in the Barri Vell
The Barri Vell is one of the best preserved medieval quarters in Catalonia. Begin at the riverside Onyar houses, painted in warm ochres and reds, then cross the Eiffel-built iron bridge into the maze of stone lanes. The Jewish Quarter, known as El Call, is among the most complete in Europe, its narrow alleys almost unchanged since the Middle Ages. The Baroque staircase up to the cathedral is the most photographed spot in the city.
Walking the city walls
The Passeig de la Muralla, the walk along the old defensive walls, is the highlight for many visitors. You can follow the ramparts for a good stretch above the rooftops, with watchtowers offering wide views over the city, the cathedral and the surrounding hills. It is free, open to the public and best at the end of the day when the light turns golden. A guided walking tour links the walls with the cathedral and the Jewish Quarter so you do not miss the hidden corners.
Explore the old town with a guide who knows its layers, from Roman walls to medieval lanes.
